Nonprofit organizations play a critical role in the economy of the Commonwealth.  From Healthcare to Social Services, Education to the Arts, they are part of the fabric of our quality of life—often providing the pivotal link between the public and private sectors that enables successful collaboration.

Serving as a director of a nonprofit can be a very fulfilling experience—providing the opportunity to combine one’s expertise with a passion for the mission of the organization.  And increasingly, the governance of nonprofits has evolved to levels of sophistication and complexity similar to those at public companies.

Our panel will discuss issues facing nonprofits and their boards today.  From selection and recruitment of board members, to expectations and the role boards play in areas such as strategy and fundraising, we expect a lively and timely conversation.

About Our Panel:

Maura HealyAttorney General Maura Healey helped lead the Attorney General’s Office for seven years, ultimately overseeing more than half of the office’s 500 employees. She began as Chief of the Civil Rights Division and went on to direct two of the office’s most prominent divisions: the Public Protection & Advocacy Bureau and the Business & Labor Bureau. Through her involvement in the Non-Profit Organizations/Public Charities division of the Attorney General’s office, Maura has been instrumental in regulating, protecting and investigating MA public charities. The Division is responsible for overseeing more than 23,000 public charities in Massachusetts, including ensuring appropriate application of charitable assets, investigating allegations and initiating enforcement actions in cases of breach of fiduciary duty, and supporting transparency through publication of filed reports and forms.  The Division also oversees paid fundraisers, including enforcement of registration and filing requirements and prosecution of solicitation fraud.

Mary BeckmanMary A. Beckman - Chief of the Non-Profit Organizations/Public Charities Division of the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General.
The Non-Profit Organizations/Public Charities Division of the Attorney General’s Office is statutorily charged with protecting the public’s interest in the over 23,000 public charities that operate in Massachusetts. Prior to joining the office in August of 2011, Ms. Beckman was the Compliance Officer at Children’s Hospital Boston for nine years. Ms. Beckman served as Assistant Secretary for Health Policy for Governor Cellucci and Acting Governor Swift and as Deputy Legal Counsel for Governors Cellucci and Weld. Prior to her public service, Ms. Beckman was an Associate in the Health Law Practice at Ropes & Gray.

Grace FeyGrace Fey currently serves as Trustee of John Hancock Financial Services and is on the Board of Directors of the Fiduciary Trust Co.  She formerly served on the Boards of Tucker Anthony Sutro and Bioject Medical Technologies.  Grace Fey has earned a Professional Director Certification awarded by the Corporate Directors Group, an organization accredited by RiskMetrics ISS as a director education provider.  She is also a member of National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) and Board Leaders. Ms. Fey was formerly Chairperson of the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees and President of the UMass Foundation.  She is a former member of the Board of Higher Education, which oversees State and Community Colleges.  Ms. Fey is the former Chairperson of The Museum of Fine Arts Boston Board of Trustees, and is currently an Honorary trustee. She is an Overseer at WGBH in Boston and is on the Board of Tuft’s Medical Center.

She is the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Zoo New England (Franklin Park and Stone Zoos) and former Chair of the Commonwealth Institute. She is a Trustee of the Mabel Louise Riley Foundation and member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Investment Committee of the Boston Foundation.

Josh KraftJosh Kraft, Nicholas President and CEO, has spent more than 20 years serving youth at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. Prior to accepting his current role in 2008, he was the Founding Executive Director of BGCB’s Gerald and Darlene Jordan Club in Chelsea. For 15 years, he led the after-school program from the basement of a public housing development, until the current state-of-the-art building could be built.

Josh serves on the Board of Beaver Country Day School as well as the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, is an Overseer for the Museum of Science and Lasell College, and is also a volunteer soccer and basketball coach in Newton. Concurrently, Josh is the President of New England Patriots Charitable Foundation where he oversees numerous initiatives, such as the Community MVP Awards and License Plate Campaign.

About Our Moderator

Bob GalleryRobert Gallery serves as Bank of America Massachusetts president, providing business, civic and philanthropic leadership for the company throughout the Commonwealth.

Mr. Gallery joined predecessor institution Bank Boston in 1991 and has held a number of positions including managing director of U.S. Trust/Private Wealth Management for Greater Boston, various leadership roles in the Corporate-Investment Bank for FleetBoston, and head of Bank Boston’s European business while based in London.

Earlier, Mr. Gallery held a number of positions at First Chicago in corporate banking and strategic planning from 1975 to 1991.  He joined the organization’s Boston office in 1981 and served as regional manager from 1986 to 1989.

Mr. Gallery serves on several nonprofit boards, including the United Way of Massachusetts Bay & Merrimack Valley, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, and NACD New England Chapter; and is an Overseer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.   He is a trustee of BPE, an organization focused on driving outcomes for all Boston Public School students by developing great teachers and great schools. Between 2012-2014, he was chairman of the Board of Overseers at WGBH, Boston’s public broadcasting station for television.   Mr. Gallery served as chairman of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce from 2010 - 2012.
