Nonprofit Boards - Governance, Strategic and Financial Challenges
Serving as a director of a nonprofit can be very fulfilling as it provides the opportunity to contribute ones expertise and at the same time follow one’s passion for the mission of the organization. Increasingly the governance of nonprofits is reaching the sophistication and complexity of those of public companies. The program will cover the challenges to be addressed as the nonprofit organization evolves. Our panelists are comprised of experts from governance oversight, board member and nonprofit CEO. They will discuss the latest governance trends, many of which evolve around power sharing between the board and the CEO. Additionally, we will discuss the array of difficult questions that come up such as the optimal size and composition of the board, best practices in fundraising, the board’s role in financially and otherwise supporting development and red flags the AG’s office might identify. The conversation will cover the gamut of issues around the very large as well as smaller organizations.

Joan Wallace-Benjamin, CEO of The Home for Little Wanderers
Joan Wallace-Benjamin joined The Home for Little Wanderers in 2003 as President and Chief Executive Officer. Under her guidance, the agency has gained prominence in the field of child and family service providers, becoming a leader in innovative programming for underserved populations and expanding its role of advocacy for all children.
Previously, Joan was President and Chief Executive Officer of The Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts for 11 years and immediately prior to joining The Home, she served as a Consultant with Whitehead Mann, a global executive recruiting firm. She has also served as Director of Operations for Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston; Deputy Director of ABCD Head Start, and a Research Analyst for ABT Associates. Joan took a short detour from The Home in 2007 when she answered Governor-Elect Deval Patrick's call to serve as Chief of Staff on his transition team and in the first months of office. Joan has brought to all of her positions a remarkable array of skills and energy that have empowered and inspired the organizations to fulfill their missions of service, research and advocacy.
Joan has received awards too numerous to list in full, but a sampling includes being named one of Boston magazine’s 50 Most Powerful Women, February 2011; the Henry L. Shattuck Public Service City Champion Award, October 2010; Urban League Civil Rights Award, April 2007; Pinnacle Award, Achievement in Management Non-Profit from the Boston Chamber of Commerce, January 2005. Joan holds Honorary Doctorates from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1993), Newbury College, Chestnut Hill, MA (2005), and Curry College, Milton, MA (2009) and Bridgewater State University (in May 2011) and New England Law, Boston (May, 2013).
Joan serves on the Board of Directors of Bridgewater State University and was appointed by Governor Patrick to co chair with Juvenile Court Judge, Joan McMenemy on the Families and Children Requiring Assistance Advisory Board. Joan is a former Trustee of Wellesley College and member of the Board of Overseers for The Heller School for Social Policy & Management. Additionally she has been a Corporation Member of Northeastern University and a Trustee of Pine Manor College. She graduated from Wellesley College with a BA in Psychology and received her Ph.D. from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University.
Mary Beckman, Attorney General’s Office
The Non-Profit Organizations/Public Charities Division of the Attorney General’s Office is statutorily charged with protecting the public’s interest in the over 23,000 public charities that operate in Massachusetts. Prior to joining the office in August of 2011, Ms. Beckman was the Compliance Officer at Children’s Hospital Boston for nine years. Ms. Beckman served as Assistant Secretary for Health Policy for Governor Cellucci and Acting Governor Swift and as Deputy Legal Counsel for Governors Cellucci and Weld. Prior to her public service, Ms. Beckman was an Associate in the Health Law Practice at Ropes & Gray.
William Achtmeyer, Parthenon Founder and Senior Managing Partner
Bill has guided Parthenon’s vision since its founding in 1991. In 2014, Parthenon combined with EY, and Bill continues to lead the Parthenon-EY team in EY’s Transaction Advisory Services. He is a recognized authority in corporate and business unit strategy and in mergers and acquisitions. Previously, Bill was a director at Bain & Company, where he founded and led the M&A and Integration practice.
Philanthropically, Bill is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, an overseer at the Museum of Fine Arts and a governor for the Handel and Haydn Society. He is also the Chairman of Tenacity, the Chairman of the Massachusetts High Technology Council and the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Belmont Hill School. He is the former Chairman of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. In June 2012, Bill stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Overseers at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth after 11 years of service. At that time, he was awarded the Overseers’ Medal in recognition of his dedicated service to Tuck, where he has hooded more than 2,600 students at investiture ceremonies. Bill holds a BA in Public and International Affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. The Parthenon Group has joined the global EY organization and will operate as a part of EY’s Transaction Advisory Services under the Parthenon-EY brand.

Bill is the New England Managing Partner for Deloitte & Touche LLP. He leads a team of over 2,000 professionals serving clients throughout the region and is directly responsible for overseeing relationships with many of Deloitte’s most significant clients. Prior to this role he served as the Financial Services leader of the New England Practice, the region’s largest industry group.
Bill has focused much of his professional career with Deloitte in the financial services industry where he has served many of our most significant clients in the investment management sector. He is currently the Lead Client Service Partner for Eaton Vance Corporation and the Eaton Vance Family of Funds, the Firm’s largest attest relationship in New England. He has also been the Lead Client Service Partner on Fidelity Investments, Putnam Investments, MFS Corporation, MFS Funds, Brown Brothers Harriman Funds, John Hancock Mutual Funds, MassMutual Funds and Fleet Bank (now Bank of America).
Bill currently serves as the Advisory Partner on a number of clients including MassMutual Funds, Progress Software, Cabot Corp., Clean Harbors, Pioneer and Liberty Mutual, among others. He spends a significant amount of time in the area of corporate governance working with boards and audit committees on issues impacting their companies.
Bill recently concluded his term as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley, where he remains on the board and executive committee. He chairs the Corporate Advisory Board for The Boston Club, serves on the Advisory Board for the Boy Scouts’ Boston Minuteman Council, and is an active member of the board of directors for the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), and the Boston Chamber of Commerce. Previously, he served as the Chair of the Dean's Advisory Council for the Villanova School of Business.
Bill is also committed to integrating Deloitte’s initiatives, such as Diversity & Inclusion, Women’s Initiative (WIN) and Community Involvement, into his external community activities. He is the Co-Chair for The Rosoff Awards – an annual event that honors companies and individuals that promote diversity in the workplace – and as Chair of the Corporate Advisory Board for The Boston Club where he works to improve board diversity.
Bill has received the highly coveted United Way Tocqueville Society award and was selected by the Boston Business Journal in 2011 through 2015 as one of the Power 50 Most Influential Bostonians. He was recently awarded the Theodore L. Storer Good Scout Award by the Boston Minuteman Council of the Boy Scouts for his commitment to scouting in Boston. In March 2015, he was inducted into the 2015 Junior Achievement Hall of Fame for his individual achievements.
Bill is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Villanova University.
