Our panelists include Joseph “Jay” Hooley, Chair and CEO of State Street Corporation; Marcy Reed, President of National Grid and Niraj Shah - Co-Chairman, CEO and co-founder of Wayfair. Our Panelists:

Jay HooleyJoseph L. Hooley
is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of State Street Corporation, one of the world’s leading providers of financial services to institutional investors, with $27.8 trillion in assets under custody and administration and $2.3 trillion in assets under management as of June 30, 2016.

Since joining State Street in 1986, Mr. Hooley has held a number of diverse leadership positions with increasing responsibility. After leading the US Mutual Fund sales organization, he joined State Street’s shareholder servicing joint venture with Kansas City-based DST systems. From 1988 to 1990, he served as president and chief executive officer of National Financial Data Services and went on to become president and chief executive officer of Boston Financial Data Services from 1990 to 2000.

Mr. Hooley returned to State Street in 2000 to manage the company’s global investment servicing business. During this time, he played a lead role in the company’s major strategic acquisitions, including Deutsche Bank’s Global Securities Services business in 2003 and Investors Financial Services Corporation in 2007. He was appointed vice chairman in 2006, president and chief operating officer in 2008, and chairman and CEO in 2010.

Mr. Hooley is a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and a member of the Financial Services Forum in Washington, DC. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, the President’s Council of the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership (MACP) and the Board of Trustees for Boston College.

He received a bachelor of science degree from Boston College.

Marcy ReedMarcy L. Reed is President of National Grid in Massachusetts where she is responsible for the gas and electric business and manages relationships with regulators, government officials and the communities National Grid serves.  Marcy joined National Grid over 25 years ago and has held various positions in finance, merger integration, and corporate affairs.  She also spent 3 years living in London as the National Grid Head of Investor Relations.   

Marcy sits on the Boards of Blue Cross Blue Shield Massachusetts, Northeastern University, the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, The Partnership, and the New England Council.  She is the global executive sponsor for National Grid’s Women in Networks employee affinity group.

Marcy is a graduate of Dartmouth College and holds a Masters degree from Northeastern University. Married with two children, she lives in Concord, MA.


Niraj ShahNiraj Shah is Co-Chairman, CEO and co-founder of Wayfair. He co-founded the company with Steve Conine in 2002 and the pair rapidly grew the business to become the largest online retailer of home furnishings and home items in the U.S., surpassing $2.25 billion in annual sales in 2015 and $786.9 million in net revenues for second quarter 2016.

Before founding Wayfair, Niraj was CEO and co-founder of Simplify Mobile, an enterprise software company which was sold in 2001. Prior to that, he served as Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Greylock Partners, COO and a member of the Board of Directors at iXL, a publicly traded global technology consulting firm, and the CEO and co-founder of Spinners, which was sold to iXL in 1998.

Niraj has been included in Fortune Magazine's 40 Under 40, and has won the Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year award. He also serves on the board of MITX, The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, the Cornell University Council, and the Entrepreneurship @ Cornell Advisory Council.

Niraj holds a B.S. in engineering from Cornell University, and lives in Boston, Massachusetts with his wife and two children.

R. Robert PopeoR. Robert Popeo is Chairman and President of Mintz Levin and is a member of the firm’s Policy Committee.   Bob is credited with establishing the firm’s Litigation Practice and, in particular, the nationally recognized White Collar Criminal Defense Practice.   From playing a key role in reforming the Massachusetts court system to his active involvement in a long list of charitable endeavors, he has been an integral part of the fabric of Boston’s business and civic communities for more than 40 years. 

Bob has had a legal career that includes representation of a full spectrum of high-profile clients, including CEOs, doctors, lawyers, college presidents and leading political figures.  He has also represented several Fortune 100 companies and their directors and officers, and has served as a director of a number of public company boards.  Early in his professional career, Bob served as a Law Clerk to a Federal Judge, a Special Assistant Attorney General and a United States Commissioner (now known as United States Magistrate Judge).

As part of his commitment to the community, Bob has served on numerous boards of nonprofits. He has also served as an instructor at Boston University Law School, and is a frequent lecturer at public company director forums and law school programs and is a member of faculty of The American College of Corporate Governance.  Bob serves as Co-Chairman of, and is on the board of, the National Association of Corporate Directors’ New England Chapter; he is a member of the Board of Overseers at Northeastern University; he is a member of the Board of Advisors at Birmingham Business School (UK), an Associate Trustee of Boston College, and is on the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable.
