Leading a Non-Profit Board
Nonprofit organizations play a critical role in the economy of the Commonwealth. From Healthcare to Social Services, Education to the Arts, they are part of the fabric of our quality of life-often providing the pivotal link between the public and private sectors that enables successful collaboration. Serving as a director of a nonprofit can be a very fulfilling experience-providing the opportunity to combine one's expertise with a passion for the mission of the organization. And increasingly, the governance of nonprofits has evolved to levels of sophistication and complexity similar to those at public companies. Our panel will discuss issues facing nonprofits and their boards today. From selection and recruitment of board members, to expectations and the role boards play in areas such as strategy and fundraising, we expect a lively and timely conversation. We welcome members of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, including its CEO, Bob
Coughlin, to provide perspectives from this important emerging sector.
About our Panel
Chief, Health Care and Fair Competition Bureau, MA Attorney General’s Office. The Health Care and Fair Competition Bureau aligns those divisions within the Attorney General’s Office that routinely touch upon the Massachusetts health care sector in fundamental ways. The work of the bureau includes overseeing public charities, preventing anticompetitive or fraudulent practices by providers of health care products and services within the Commonwealth, safeguarding rights of health care consumers, and combating fraud and abuse in the MassHealth system. The divisions within the Health Care Fair Competition Bureau bring affirmative litigation on behalf of Massachusetts consumers and taxpayers, maintain a health care help line and mediation service, and engage in advocacy and policy initiatives to ensure access to quality, affordable health care in our state. In addition, many of the divisions work on cases and issues beyond the health care arena, such as overseeing a wide variety of charitable organizations, combatting fraud across the spectrum of government contracting, and investigating anticompetitive behavior in all manner of businesses.
Ms. Beckman was previously appointed as Chief, Non-Profit Organizations/Public Charities Division for the Office of he Attorney General in 2011. Prior to joining the Office of the Attorney General, Ms. Beckman was the Compliance Officer at Children’s Hospital Boston for nine years. Ms. Beckman served as Assistant Secretary for Health Policy for Governor Cellucci and Acting Governor Swift and as Deputy Legal Counsel for Governors Cellucci and Weld. Prior to her public service, Ms. Beckman was an Associate in the Health Law Practice at Ropes & Gray.
Sandy Moose is a Senior Advisor of The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). She joined the firm in 1968 and was a director (officer) since 1975, and a Senior Partner and Managing Director since 1989 until her retirement in December 2003. Over the course of her career at BCG, she held numerous leadership roles within the firm. She led the New York office from 1988-1998 and served as chair of the East Coast region from 1994 to 1998.
She is currently President of her own firm, Strategic Advisory Services, and serves on a number of boards. She is Chairman of Natixis Adviser Funds and Loomis Sayles Funds and recently retired as Presiding Director of Verizon and Director of AES Corp. She is Chairman of the Board of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a philanthropic grant-making institution and the immediate past President of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Other charitable organizations where she is a Trustee or Overseer include the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Huntington Theatre Company.
An active participant in women's organizations, she also is a member of the Committee of 200, a nationwide organization of women business leaders, and the International Women’s Forum, which advances women’s leadership across careers, cultures and continents.
In 1999, Dr. Moose received the American Economic Association’s Carolyn Shaw Bell award, presented annually to an individual who has furthered the status of women in the economics profession. For her contributions on boards, she was given the Outstanding Corporate Director of the Year Award in 2004 from the Outstanding Directors Exchange (ODX) and the Leadership in Public Corporate Governance Award in 2008 from the National Association of Corporate Directors' New England Chapter. Dr. Moose was also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Consulting Magazine in 2010.
As President and CEO of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, Bob’s mission is to advance Massachusetts' leadership in the life sciences to grow the industry, add value to the healthcare system and improve patient lives. He is very familiar with all areas of the Massachusetts life sciences “super cluster” and is a passionate advocate for research and the biotechnology community. Bob has spent his career in the public and private sectors. Prior to his position at MassBio he served as the Undersecretary of Economic Development within Governor Deval Patrick's administration. Prior to that, he was elected as State Representative to the 11th Norfolk district for three terms. In the legislature both healthcare and economic development were his priorities.
Bob has also been active in the community; he is a past board member of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. He is currently serving on the board of directors for The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare and Aridis Pharmaceuticals. He also is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at Boston Children’s Hospital. He has served as the honorary chairman of the Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Walk since 1996. In 2011, the American Diabetes Association honored Bob with their Father of the Year Award. In 2012, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation honored Bob with the CF Foundation Volunteer Leadership Award and in 2013 he received the Boston Irish Business Award from the Boston Irish Business Association. In 2014, he was honored for his leadership in biotechnology by the Massachusetts Society for Medical Research. He received the NTSAD advocate of the year in 2015 and was named to the Boston Business Journal’s Power 50, Top 50 Most Influential Bostonians in 2015. In 2016 he was honored with the Boston Biotech CEO Lifetime Achievement Award.
Peter is the founder and president of Nessen Associates. He is a public accountant who has served as Chief Executive Officer and on the governing Board of Advisors for national investment-banking firms. From 1987 to 1990, Peter was Assistant Secretary of Administration and Finance responsible for human and social service purchase reform. From 1991 to 1993, Peter was Secretary of the Executive Office for Administration and Finance for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In that capacity, he was the senior cabinet member and the chief financial officer in Governor Weld’s cabinet. Peter has also been a partner in the accounting firms of BDO Seidman and Henry J. Bornhofft Company, and the Dean for Resources and Special Projects at Harvard Medical School. He chaired the Massachusetts Cultural Council and served on the Governor’s Commission evaluating school reform. Peter is the Chair of NCN Financial Corp. and serves on the Board of the Boston Foundation. He is the Chair of the Forsyth Institute, which was founded over 100 years ago to provide free dental care to Boston’s poorest children.
Peter holds a BA degree from Dartmouth College and a Master’s in Business Administration from Dartmouth’s Amos Tuck Graduate School of Business Administration. He currently serves on the boards of numerous for-profit and non-profit organizations.
About Our Moderator
Robert Gallery served as Bank of America Massachusetts president, providing business, civic and philanthropic leadership for the company throughout the Commonwealth. Mr. Gallery joined predecessor institution Bank Boston in 1991 and has held a number of positions including managing director of U.S. Trust/Private Wealth Management for Greater Boston, various leadership roles in the Corporate-Investment Bank for FleetBoston, and head of Bank Boston’s European business while based in London. Mr. Gallery serves on the board of Fiduciary Trust Company, in Boston. In addition, he is Chair of the Trustees of the Boston Public Library, and a member of the Board of the Pine Street Inn, as well as the NACD New England Chapter.
Past board roles have included the United Way of Massachusetts Bay & Merrimack Valley; the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, and Cradles to Crayons, among others. Between 2012-2014, he was chairman of the Board of Overseers at WGBH, and served as chairman of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce from 2010 - 2012. Mr. Gallery holds a BA from Loyola University Chicago, and he received his MBA from Northwestern University.
