Each day seems to bring a new headline of corporate and organizational cultures that have either failed or been ineffective to the point of being irrelevant. The impact can be fatal to careers, financially painful for the bottom line and damaging to the reputations of those involved not to mention the impact on those hurt in the process.
Our panel will discuss the role of the board in establishing, building and maintaining a company's culture, how to best work with management leadership and how to recognize when the culture may look and sound good on paper but may be losing its relevance. The panel will also discuss the linkages of the corporate culture to the reward and recognition systems, its business strategy as well the company's operating style and reputation - internally and externally. The discussion will cover examples of both public and private companies as well as not for profit organizations. The topic is increasingly in the public eye and an important issue for every board member.
About Our Panel:
Anne Szostak is a business and community leader with significant management and board experience in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Anne currently sits on the boards of Dr Pepper Snapple Group, IDEXX Laboratories, and Tupperware Brands Corporation. She chairs the Compensation Committees of Dr Pepper and IDEXX and formerly chaired the Compensation Committee of Tupperware Brands. She also sits on the Audit Committees of IDEXX Labs and Tupperware Brands. Anne’s previous board positions include Belo Corporation, Spherion Corporation, NEBS, Providence Gas Company, Central Maine Power, ChoicePoint and the privately held L. Knife & Son, Inc. Anne is a trustee and vice chairman of Bryant University. She formerly sat on the boards of Colby College, the RI Foundation, and Care New England. She is a past chairman of the board and the capital campaign chair for Women & Infants Hospital, one of the country’s leading women’s hospitals. Anne is the first woman to chair the National Boys and Girls Clubs of America board; she now serves as a life governor. Anne leads a Human Resources consulting practice that provides strategic advice to senior executives in the public, private, and not-for profit sectors. In 2004, she retired from Bank of America (formerly Fleet Bank) after serving the company for 31 years in a variety of line and staff positions. She was Chairman and CEO of Fleet Bank of Maine and Fleet Bank of Rhode Island. She was also a Corporate EVP of Fleet’s holding company and she was a member of the management committee. Anne graduated from Colby College and currently serves as a trustee emerita. She has five honorary degrees among her many awards and honors. Anne & her husband, Michael, live in Bristol, RI.
Jim Mullen - From 2011 thru 2017, Mr. Mullen was Chief Executive Officer of Patheon N.V., a leading global provider of pharmaceutical development and manufacturing services, which was acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. in 2017. Prior to joining Patheon, from 2003 to 2010, Mr. Mullen served as Chief Executive Officer and President at Biogen, one of the world's largest biotechnology companies. Mr. Mullen held various operating positions at Biogen prior to becoming Chief Executive Officer, including Vice President, Operations, as well as several key manufacturing and engineering positions and spent over nine years at SmithKline Beecham. Currently he serves on the Board of Directors of Insulet, Inc and Vicarius Pharma AG. He previously served on the Board of Directors of PerkinElmer and also as Chairman of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization. Mr. Mullen holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Business Administration from Villanova University. Mr. Mullen has more than 35 years of industry leadership experience and has particular expertise in biotech manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing, and mergers and acquisitions.
Lucinda Doran is an experienced independent director and CEO with over 30 years’ experience creating, evaluating, transforming, facilitating and renewing boards and executives teams for succession, M&A, turnaround, growth, culture change and performance improvement. She has served on the boards of Ramora Therapeutics, a biotech start up, Harvard Vanguard, AutoParts International and Stonebridge, a defense contractor as well as a number of not for profit boards. She possesses deep expertise in Organization Strategy and Executive and Organization Assessment, Measurement, Design and Development with extensive experience serving public, private equity and multi-generational family businesses. She was Founder/CEO of The Corporate Advisory Group, President/CEO of the Center for Quality of Management and created Daly & Co’s Board Services practice.
About Our Moderator:
Bob Gore has spent much of his career in boardrooms as a consultant and advisor on corporate strategy, executive compensation, governance merger/acquisition integration and executive succession planning. From 1980 to 2010 he was a partner and lead consultant with Towers Perrin. Bob and his family relocated to Boston in 1991 where he led a wide variety of client initiatives. From 2005 to 2010 Bob was the Boston Office Managing Partner responsible for 300 employees and revenues of $50 million.
Bob was a member of the Executive Committee of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Trustee and Co-Chair of the Finance Committee at the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy and a board member of Instinct Health and Sevo Nutraceuticals. Bob is currently chair of Windrush Farm Therapeutic Equitation, a board member of the Essex County Community Foundation and a member of the Advisory Board of Boston Private Bank and Trust.
Bob received his BA from the University of Wyoming in 1970 and his MBA in Finance and Management from the Wharton School in 1976.
